All donations and sales from the exhibition will be matched by Hannah Traore Gallery and given directly back to the schools.
Hannah Traore Gallery is pleased to present Our Neighborhood: Another Look Around with The Anna Silver School and The Island School.
This is the gallery’s second exhibition featuring student artwork from public schools in the Lower East Side community. For this project, students from Kindergarten to 5th grade were invited to make art inspired by their surrounding neighborhood. Through this prompt, children were encouraged to appreciate their community as an inclusive, generative space where they can express themselves freely and inventively. Student artwork ranges from crayon drawings to photographs, sculpture, and collage; depicting personal observations, affirmations, and reflections on life, friends, and family.
In the face of the federal government’s slashed funding for art and education, it is the community’s responsibility to continue to advocate for these essential programs, not only finding inventive ways to continue to offer creative outlets to their students, but to stress how important artistic expression is to individuals’ emotional well being, personal growth, and sense of belonging from an early age. Concious of the way arts education instills essential lessons on empathy, critical thinking, and civic engagement, these schools are united by their enduring commitment to ensuring that art programs are available within and beyond the classroom. Together, they celebrate the profound creations that come from students when they are given space for their imaginations.
In staging this exhibition, the gallery recognizes the importance of being actively engaged in our community, understanding our resources and space as something that our neighbors can call on. All proceeds from work sold will be matched by the gallery and returned to each school as a charitable donation. Hannah Traore Gallery strives to be a receptive and responsive member of the Lower East Side, supporting projects that materially address the desires and needs of our neighborhood and inspire children to cultivate their own engaged communities as they grow up-whether in the Lower East Side or beyond.
The Anna Silver School
PS 20, The Anna Silver School, is a Pre-K to 5th-grade elementary school located in District 1 of the Lower East Side. It is an un-zoned school and is one of only a handful of schools offering dual-language programs in both Mandarin and Spanish. They have a strongly diverse community of families that reflects the social, economic, and cultural diversity of New York. They are currently a Title I school.
The Island School
Led by Principal Suany Ramos, The Island School, PS/MS 188, serves over 450 Pre-K to 8th-grade students (97% Title I Eligible). Located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in a restored hundred-plus-year-old building, they are nestled between the Lillian Wald and Baruch public housing complexes and across the street from The Urban Family Center, a temporary housing facility.
All donations and sales from the exhibition will be matched by Hannah Traore Gallery and given directly back to the schools.
